Maine Dems accept genital mutilation for little girls

Maine -- The Republicans sponsored a bill to outlaw female genital mutilation (FMG), so of course, the Democrats oppose it. They fear it will offend the ten thousand or so Somalis, in this case, aka voters.

The Democrats in Maine are willing to look the other way when a young girl's clitoris is painfully cut out and her vagina is stitched closed. It's a common practice in this culture; so common, in fact, that it's estimated to be performed on over 90 percent of the female population.

The purpose of FGM is to ensure girls remain chaste until they're married and that they then derive no pleasure from sexual activity.

It's a different story for the men, of course.

FGM is performed most often by "cutters," or Somali midwives. Most of the time, the procedure is done without anesthesia and with dirty razor blades. It's quite common for the young victims of the cutting to suffer infections from the procedure--some have even died from it.

"I had never heard of it, [FGM] when someone first brought to my attentin that it could be happening here," said Rep. Heather Sirocki (R-ME). "I said, 'You're kidding me, right?'"

When she realized it was serious, Sirocki introduced a bill to ban FGM in Maine. She was so naŃ—ve that she actually believed the bill would pass unanimously.

But progressive groups like the American Civil Liberties Union and immigrant aid organizations argued that it isn't up to the states to interfere with cultural traditions that run counter to American values.

With that logic, it should be perfectly okay for Eskimos to send out their grandparents to be eaten by the polar bears--that was once a cultural traditions, but was finally outlawed.

"I believe they are more afraid of offending someone than they are in protecting little girls," Sirocki said. "We believe the immigrant population is vulnerable. I want to get this done this year."

And she needs to push it through this year because under Maine law, as a four-term member of the House, she isn't eligible to run again for re-election next year.

While the Dems aren't openly defending FGM, they contend that child protection laws that already exist are sufficient, and singling out cutting off a girl's clitoris and sewing up her vagina by outlawing it, would be disrespectful of the Somali's cultural inheritance.

I would agree with the Democrats if all their female congresswomen, the wives of male Democrat congressmen, and all the female members of their families would have the barbaric procedure done to them.

One Democratic Rep. Barbara Cardone of Bangor, who opposes the bill, said she would wait until next year, when Sirocki is gone, and then submit the bill in her own name, so that Democrats would get the credit for protecting children.

If you don't throw up in your mouth after hearing this, you have no soul.
