Marco will not go for the throat on immigration reform

At a town hall meeting in South Carolina, GOP candidate Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) responded to a question regarding the flow of illegal immigrants coming into the US and what he planned to do about it.

Rubio went through his usual bullet points about using E-verify and entry-exit visa tracking as well as a non-Mexican-funded wall or fence to keep illegals out. He even spoke about securing the border.

But one thing he promised, as a way of contrasting himself with Obama is in regard to immigration reform saying that his administration won't ram it down your throat like President Obama.

Rubio promised he wouldn't do anything on immigration until the border is secured in a way the American people could "believe and see with [their] own eyes."

Establishment candidate Rubio still offers a somewhat moderate path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, and no longer talks about it in the same liberal, Gang of Eight terms.

"I don't think the American people are saying we ought to round up every single person and deport them. But you're also not going to go around handing out citizenship cards. That's absurd," he said.

Perhaps Mitt Romney had the right idea by saying that illegals would deport themselves if they found it impossible to come here and work. If we made it a serious offense to hire illegal immigrants, used E-verify and deport new illegal arrivals, it might work.

Slowing down the handouts wouldn't hurt either.
