When we come to the point where people refuse to respect the rights of all people, including those who have the responsibility of risking their lives to protect its citizenry, we have arrived at a point in our history where we've relinquished the rights of the majority to cater to the anger and intolerance of the few.
The Arby's fast food restaurant chain announced (finally) that it has fired a Florida restaurant manager, Angel Mirabel, 22, and suspended scumcrumpet clerk, Kenneth Davenport, 19, after a female cop said she was denied service because of her job.
Jason Rollins, a spokesman for Arby's, told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel (that's a newspaper that stands guard to ensure the sun goes down at night) that the two morons had been disciplined.
The roast beef hit the proverbial fan last Tuesday night when Pembroke Pines Police Sgt. Jennifer Martin, 34, ordered a meal at the drive-thru, handed over her credit card to pay, and Davenport allegedly refused to ring up her order. Mirabel then told Sgt. Martin, 'He doesn't want to serve you because you are a police officer."
Although Martin eventually got her meal but wisely declined to eat it, knowing that dickwads like Maribel and Davenport had likely expectorated on it. So the officer returned the food and got a refund.
The following day, the police department tweeted about the incident, and Police Chief Dan Giustino said it was "unacceptable." He said in a statement, "I am offended and appalled that an individual within our community would treat a police officer in such a manner."
Davenport knew he was in deep chocolate and claimed the controversy stemmed from a misunderstanding, and Angel Maribel's comment was an attempt at a joke. He told the Sun-Sentinel that he was unable to ring up the officer's order because he was all jammed up with other customers [who weren't cops]. He said that Maribel made the [moronic] remark after he asked him to help with the transaction.
"We don't hate cops," Davenport said. "We don't hate anybody. We're just trying to get people out of the drive-thru."
And maybe it's true, but one can understand how a stupid statement like that of Maribel's could be taken seriously in today's anti-cop climate and should never had been said as a joke. And, like Chaucer said, "Many a true word has been spoken in jest." Well, actually he wrote, "Ful ofte in game a sooth I have herd saye."
Same old, same old.
On Thursday, good old free market enterprise kicked in with McDonald's going on air of a local radio station and delivering bags of pancakes and Egg McMuffins to the department on Thursday morning. Whole Foods also put out a spread and residents supplied what cops love most, coffee and donuts from Dunkin' Donuts.
Moral of the story: if you manage a restaurant, or anything, put your brain in gear before engaging your mouth.
